Meeting Minutes: Anthropology and Mental Health Interest Group
Minneapolis, MN, 11/17/16
1) AMHIG Conference- A few years ago we put on a very successful 1 day conference at American University prior to the AAA Meetings. Participants discussed whether we would like to do this again in 2017. We reported that this year, another SIG had carried out a half-day conference by piggy-backing on the existing conference rather than running a stand-alone meeting, as we had done. We discussed the fact that this approach would entail far less work than the one we used. We are currently in contact with the Society for Medical Anthropology to put this initiative into place. If we get the green light, the meeting will likely take place on November 28, 2017 in Washington, DC.
2) Policy statement- The SMA encourages it SIGs to develop policy papers on issues of significant concern through its Take a Stand initiative. A number of interesting mental health issues were raised that would lend themselves to this type of initiative. However, given that the incoming Trump Administration’s specific policies regarding mental health and well-being were unknown, it was decided to table this initiative to our next meeting.
3) Paper prize- We reported on our first paper prize competition. The winners were Whitney Duncan (University of Northern Colorado) in the Professional category and Philippa Fielding (University of Sussex) for the Student category. We will be submitting an RFP for 2017’s paper prize in the Spring.
Note: For those who can attend, we will hold a business meeting at the Society for Applied Anthropology Meeting in Santa Fe, NM.
AMHIG’s inaugural meting will take place on December 2, 2014 in Washington, DC. If you would like to attend and/or submit a roundtable abstract, please click on the CFP below:
CFP- Anthropology and Mental Health Interest Group Conference 2014
We look forward to seeing you in DC!
The SMA has asked each of its Special Interest Groups (SIG) to develop a logo. For those of you are artistically inclined, we would really appreciate your assistance in developing an interesting and compelling logo for our organization. Please contact me if you are able to help.
By now you have probably heard that AMHIG will be holding a conference prior to the AAAs. To my knowledge, we are the first SMA SIG to have done this, so hurray for us! At this point, the conference planning has fallen to a very small group of us (Mahri Irvine, Shir Lerman, and myself). However, we would greatly welcome other members to work with us between now and December to make the conference a success.
This is just a brief reminder to please take a minute to complete our meeting attendance survey, The survey will only remain open through Friday.
Given that we have experienced a recent surge in membership (for all new members, welcome!) we would like to put together a schedule of events at the AAA that would be of interest to AMHIG members attending the meeting. If you are participating in a panel, presenting a poster or film, or are involved in any other events or activities that would be of interest to the group, please consider providing us this information via the following link:
We will compile this information prior to the meeting and post it on our website.
Also, a reminder that the AMHIG business meeting will take place on Friday, 11/22 from 12:15-1:30. Last year’s inaugural meeting was interesting and fun, and we expect that this year’s will be even better. Finally, we are in the process of organizing an AMHIG happy hour and (with luck) a field trip/site visit pertaining to community mental health. We will keep you posted.
